We’re so excited to announce that construction has begun on our new Orlando shelter!

As the future home of the Kylie J. Capri Campus and Edward H. Hensley Adoption Center, this 25,000 sq ft facility will be a beacon for animal welfare in Central Florida.

Once open, the modernized space located on John Young Parkway will include indoor and outdoor play yards, air conditioning for all pets, an enhanced area dedicated to adoption services, plus a vegetable and herb garden for enrichment and natural treats!
The jewel of the shelter will be the 10,000 sq ft veterinary unit to care for ill or injured animals with disease-specific quarantine space for both dogs and cats, as well as dedicated rooms for neonatal kittens. This new era of our shelter veterinary abilities will allow us to help even more animals than ever before!

Construction of the new shelter is conducted by H.J. High, and the design is by Borrelli + Partners. The buildout will take approximately 14 months with an estimated completion date of February 2026.
Naming opportunities are still available! Help make a difference for thousands of cats and dogs in our community for years to come!

Five dogs are safe and sound with Cedar Street Charitable Foundation after being rescued from the path of Hurricane Helene

As the storm approaches the state, a massive effort has taken place to relocate shelter pets residing in a vulnerable area of Florida’s Panhandle.

Cedar Street Charitable Foundation is proud to assist in this remarkable endeavor, a feat we could not accomplish without your help!

With only a few days’ notice, organizations across the state sprang into action to coordinate relief for dogs residing at Madison County Animal Services.

The shelter, located in the Florida Panhandle, is in the direct path of what will become a Category 4 hurricane. The kennel space the dogs were occupying was outdoors and not equipped to protect the pets from incoming severe weather.

Yesterday, Cedar Street Charitable Foundation received five of the dogs after a long journey south. The pets are now settling into their new, cozy accommodations while we wait for the storm to pass. Afterwards, they will be made available for adoption through our Sanford shelter.

As we shine the spotlight on our best furry friends today, can you help us provide nourishing meals and lifesaving medical care
for pets in need?

Your gift can change a life!

Back in May, the bony frame of an emaciated 6-year-old black dog came through the doors of our Sanford shelter. The hair on the back half of her body was almost completely gone, revealing flaking, unhealthy skin. The only detail we were told about her past was that she had been living her life locked inside the bathroom of her previous home.

We learned that her name was Midnight and despite the neglect she had endured, she approached her new caretakers with a gentle, laid-back disposition. Not ones to dwell on the past, we immediately began to help her discover a new future.

Our veterinary staff plotted out her course to recovery and Midnight was placed into foster care to begin her journey of healing.

Once Midnight found herself in a safe space, her body quickly recovered over the course of two months.

As her frame filled out from a proper diet, her dark hair replenished itself and her skin issues resolved. She began to play and enjoy exercise, but has ultimately decided her favorite pastime is sleeping – which she loves to do through the night and sprinkled in between her daily activities!

That scrawny dog we received is currently a distant memory from the thriving, happy Midnight that we know today. Now ready to find herself an adopter, Midnight would prefer to be the only pet in the home so she can be the sole recipient of your attention. After all, she deserves it!

In the meantime, we will continue to provide her with yummy food, proper medical care, and plenty of love until she graduates from our care to yours. If you are interested in providing a forever home to Midnight, please contact her foster, Asodeh, at asodeh.magner@gmail.com.

Not looking to adopt, but still want to support our shelter dogs? Transformations like Midnight’s aren’t possible without your help!

The time to prepare your pets for hurricane season is now — before the storm! Here is your to-do list:

Never Leave Your Pet Behind.

It may seem obvious to pet owners to always take their pet with them in the event of an evacuation, but it can be a stressful time to make decisions, especially if it’s in response to an emergency like flooding and structural damage to your shelter. This is why it’s imperative to be prepared and have a plan. Whether its evacuation before the storm arrives, or having to leave your shelter during the storm due to flooding or damage, always remember to bring your pet.

Place two ID tags on your pet’s collar.

Include a temporary tag with the phone number of a friend or relative who lives outside your immediate area. This will be helpful in the event you are separated from your pet and are a long distance away. You will also want to include your pet’s rabies tag.

Microchip your pet.

In the event your pet is lost and has found a way out of their collar or if the tags to fall off, microchipping is the next step for placing lost animals back in their homes after a storm. If your pet isn’t microchipped, you can scheduled an appointment at a Cedar Street Charitable Foundation of Orlando Veterinary Clinics in Sanford or Alafaya by calling (407) 351-7744. Make sure their chip registration is updated. Be sure to locate and update your microchip registry.

Prepare a Travel Kit for your pet.

Make sure you pack enough food, bottled water, and needed prescriptions/medications to last at least two weeks. Include carriers, crates, bowls, towels, bathing supplies, flea/tick control, leashes, and toys.

Update Vaccinations.

Make sure your pet is up-to-date on their vaccines, as it is required for most storm shelters to show your pet’s records. Create a record file for each pet and store in a waterproof ziplock baggie or storage tub. Include pet licenses/registrations and any other papers relating to your pet and their health that are important to have on hand. Some of this information is also required to board or could be helpful for a caretaker.

Carry a picture of you and your pet together.

A picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you in case of a lost pet. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics.

Have Travel Carriers Handy for Evacuation.

Make your pet’s carrier or crate is a fun and safe space by placing treats, toys and meals in it on a routine basis.

Most Public Evacuation Shelters Do Not Accept Pets.

Know ahead of time where your pet-friendly accommodations are whether it’s a shelter, hotel, etc. Visit gopetfriendly.com to locate hotels or call 3-1-1 to inquire about pet-friendly shelters in Orange County.

Cedar Street Charitable Foundation recently welcomed 16 shelter dogs from Grand Cayman seeking refuge from Hurricane Beryl.

As we Floridians know, it is impossible to truly predict the wrath of a hurricane. While we always hope for the best, we can be without power and running on limited resources for weeks in the wake of a strong storm. It can be a massive struggle for shelters and rescues in the Caribbean to properly care for their animals if they lose power, water, or other critical infrastructure.

While we can’t control the weather, we can give pets in need a safe haven and a fresh start.

As the storm barreled closer to Grand Cayman last week, the incredible One Dog At A Time worked tirelessly to secure travel arrangements for the dogs to fly from the island to Tampa International Airport where Cedar Street Charitable Foundation staff would be waiting for them. We received 9 just before Beryl hit, then 7 more as soon as it was safe to get them off the ground after it passed.

Now settled into the Sunshine State, many of these pups have already been adopted!

We are always thinking of our Caribbean rescue partners during this unpredictable time of year and thank them for their heroic dedication to the pets in their care. We’re proud to have been able to offer a helping hand to these special dogs and wish them all the best in their new homes!

During the warmest months of the year, thousands of kittens are born to outdoor community cats in Central Florida.

While we like to focus on the cute and cuddly aspects of this time of year, the reality is that kitten season isn’t always a lighthearted experience. Being born in the great outdoors comes with a unique set of challenges for these youngsters, who are often unbelievably resilient in the face of hunger, injury, and illness.

Though Copper seemed to have only known turmoil in his short life previously, we are grateful to have been able to provide the medical care, nutritious food, and comfort he so desperately needed.

Though this isn’t an easy time of year for any shelter, we know we can make it through and do our best for pets like Copper with your help!

With over 150 kittens currently in foster care, we are constantly in dire need of poultry-flavored wet kitten food and formula to help nurse motherless neonates. If you are interested in donating items, they can be dropped off at either of our shelter locations or sent via our Chewy & Amazon wishlists.

Copper came into our care at about two months old after being found alone by a good samaritan. He was quite underweight and even more troubling, his right leg had been mangled by an unknown force. Our veterinary team assessed his wounds and determined that his leg was unfortunately too far gone to be saved.

Our veterinarian, Dr. Andersen, was able to amputate the affected leg to prevent it from causing any more suffering to Copper. After spending some time in foster care to heal, this tenacious kitten was finally cleared for adoption and has now found his forever home.

Be there for all of our most vulnerable pets’ major milestones by enrolling in our monthly giving program. Become a Shelter Star!

Whatever the amount you choose to donate, your gift will provide nourishing meals, lifesaving medical care, and hope to cats and dogs in need every single month.

To help Axel nurse from his bottle comfortably, our ever-innovative veterinarian Dr. Martin made a special prosthetic to insert into his mouth during feedings.

With Axel finally able to get the nutrition he needed consistently, he began to get stronger. His inquisitive and often silly personality began to shine!

Our staff celebrated every small victory, but just as our little guy was getting the hang of eating, Axel developed a severe upper respiratory infection. He had been fighting so hard, but wasn’t ready to give up yet.

Axel was brought to our shelter at only 10 days old. This tiny pug was so hungry, but had been unable to nurse successfully from his mother due to a cleft palate. Even getting formula from a bottle was a mountain to climb for this little one.

On top of all of that, our team would come to realize that he was living with a chronic condition called hydrocephalus, which is a neurological disorder caused by a buildup of fluid in his brain.

Axel was placed in the care of Sanford shelter manager, Michelle, who has had extensive experience caring for pets with similar cleft palate issues in the past.

Our veterinary team was able to provide the needed medications and a treatment plan, which included time in a special nebulizer box to help him breathe more easily. After a few weeks of specialized care and lots of love, Axel began to feel much better.

After being in our care for five months, Axel had grown into a confident young pup. His cleft palate had also begun to close as he got older, its size reducing by 50-75%!

As his future began to look bright, we knew he might need long-term support for his neurological condition. Luckily, we were able to find placement for him with the incredible Pug Rescue of Florida and Georgia, who have been wonderful in guiding Axel into this next phase of his life.

Through the five months that Axel found comfort and healing with Cedar Street Charitable Foundation, our Shelter Stars were right beside us supporting him.

No matter what comes through our doors, we know we can take it on with your help!
